Nearby Far (2013)

Filmed on the dunes of Oregon, Nearby Far explores memory, the passage of time, interplay of space, and the nuance of gesture in this unique environment. Processing the continuous film into stop-frame images brings the viewer into the realm of posture; to freeze expended energy in time while preserving the illusion of movement. The choreography seems to evoke two simultaneous and diametrically opposed sensations: a celebration of finding one another and moving together versus a lament and sense of urgency that our time together is short. The relationships between the two characters are developed through space and proximity, foreground and background, stability and instability. The sand is also an important point of development; sometimes dancing on, using, playing with, becoming part of, struggling against, growing overcome, and being consumed by it.

Atavistic Vestiges [after the rain] (2009)

As a child growing up in my rural hometown, torrential summer downpours were very common. Some of my favorite memories were running out to the fields or through the forest floor after these storms to see what interesting treasures the rain had revealed on the surface of the earth. Things like: flint arrowheads, railroad spikes, broken pottery, colorful glass medicine bottles, and rusty logging equipment of all shapes and function could be discovered - with a good eye. Wiping away the dirt, I couldn't help but feel the shadows of the people who left these things behind long ago.
In collaboration with Video Artist: Laura Oxendine, This work became a multimedia presentation. Many thanks to Laura for her expertise and sensitivity to every musical nuance.
