In a world where digital files can become physical objects through 3D printing, off-the-shelf programmable electronics are less expensive and more ubiquitous, and a growing community of Makers and DIY’ers support learning and education - much of Chet Udell’s research and creative work focuses on applying these key capabilities to explore: design, interaction, performance, and STEAM (Science, Tech, Engineering, Arts, & Math) education in musical and scientific instrumentation. As Director of the Oregon State University Openly Published Environmental Sensing Lab, Udell’s career in instrument design is rooted in music performance and composition. In addition to helping an international community of researchers advance environmental science (incl. NOAA, NSF, EPA, USDA, Stroud Water Research Center, KNUST Kumasi Ghana, TU Delft), Udell continues to produce, lecture, conduct workshops, and perform globally with new musical instruments and STEAM education Technologies (incl. How Big Is Your Dream, Intel-4H-OSU Mariachi STEAM Camp, and CymaSpace).
